Women, take charge by learning the facts of breast cancer

(SSU’s Breast Cancer Awareness Luncheon will give women the power of information)

The Shawnee State University Komen Grant Committee and the Susan G. Komen Foundation-Columbus Affiliate have teamed up to encourage women to learn about the facts of breast cancer during a luncheon to be held at SSU.
The luncheon, free to all the SSU students, faculty, and their guests, will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Oct. 18, 2007 at the Micklethwaite Banquet Hall in the University Center. The event will include presentations explaining early detection, screenings, and resources for obtaining breast healthcare.
“Women often misunderstand who and when breast cancer strikes,” said Christy Sherman, special projects coordinator.
Sherman hopes the event will make more women aware of the disease because they often do not discover it until it has reached an advanced stage.
There will also be representatives from different women’s organizations present, with the highlight being guest speaker Carolyn McKinnon, RN, BSN.
McKinnon is a recent breast cancer survivor, who because of her age, might not typically be thought of as being diagnosed with breast cancer.
“I thought she would be a good speaker because I wanted someone who the students could relate to and get them thinking that that could be them five years down the road,” Sherman said.
Sherman will also be bringing in models to teach the women to feel for lumps that may be cancerous.
SSU is also collecting Yoplait yogurt lids around the campus to help show their support in the fight against breast cancer. To find out more information about the luncheon of the Yoplait yogurt lids project, and to register you and your guest for the luncheon e-mail dhowell@shawnee.edu or contact (740) 351-3210.

Toombs Children’s Early Learning Center students to be featured in the upcoming “Tapestries”

(“Tapestries” continues to find new ways to celebrate artists at SSU and in the community)

The next issue of SSU’s “Tapestries” Women Weaving Our World” will include, for the first time, a new section highlighting the creativity of Toombs Children’s Early Learning Center students.
“The children’s works that we’ll include a range from their artworks to any of their writing,” said Elsie Shabazz, editor-in-chief of “Tapestries,” who hopes this new section will generate even more interest in the magazine among the public as well as SSU students.
The purpose of the magazine is to promote and celebrate women and their many abilities. “Tapestries” includes works not only of SSU students, but also the members of the community.
“We are interested in building bridges with not only the University’s community, but also with the community at large,” says Shannon Lawson, Women’s Forum Selection Committee.
The only criterion for a work to be accepted by the “Tapestries” is that the piece must be about a woman, but not only works by women will be accepted. In previous issues, men have dedicated their work in honor of the women in their lives. The magazine accepts pictures, drawings, photographs, poetry, dedications, stories, and more.
The magazine gives the students and the community a chance to have their work published in a college magazine and instills a sense of pride in their abilities. “Tapestries” also holds a release party each time a new issue is published to give the authors and community a chance to discuss their work with each other.
If you are interested in submitting a work to the “Tapestries,” the deadline is Jan. 18, 2008. E-mail your work to eshabazz@shawnee.edu (one work per e-mail please). If you have any questions about the magazine, contact Elsie Shabazz at (740) 351-3300 or e-mail her at eshabazz@shawnee.edu.

“I have been trying to address the needs of autistic children and growing adults in our area because there were not too many services available,” said Wendy Potts, president of the Autism Project of Southern Ohio and mother of an 8-year-old autistic son. “We believe that autistic children, like any other handicapped children, deserve the same privileges of any other ‘typical’ person entering college. After meeting Lowell Austin, who has autism and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Sports Marketing, we were enlightened once again personally that despite the disability of autism, there is hope for individuals to succeed.”
An applicant must be a full-time SSU student entering his or her senior year in the teaching education field, have a 3.0 GPA and be in good academic standing. The award is divided among the yearly academic terms.
Arnold, daughter of Jerry and Joyce Arnold, is returning to SSU and majoring in education to become an intervention specialist. Arnold graduated third in her high school class, receiving an honors diploma. She was listed in Who’s Who Among American High School Students and made the National honor Roll. At SSU, Arnold has been included on the President’s and Dean’s List. She has been involved in concert, marching and pep band, Future Farmers of America, Beta Club, Spanish Club, and Family, Career and Community Leaders of America. She also participated in yearbook staff and newspaper staff. She completed many community service hours tutoring children, cleaning up the community and volunteering at local festivals.
After receiving her bachelor’s degree, Arnold hopes to obtain a position as a special education teacher and continue her education in pursuit of a master’s degree.
“We need to be not only competitive in offering programs of our ‘typical students’ in the university setting, but we also need to be competitive in offering programs for our disabled students,” Potts said.
These scholarship funds are administered through the SSU Development Foundation. Individuals or organizations interested in establishing a scholarship can contact the SSU Development Foundation at (740) 351-3284.

SOPAA OPENS SEASON WITH SPECIAL CSO CONCERT

In a season of special events, the Southern Ohio Performing Arts Association (SOPAA) leads off with a very special event featuring the Columbus Symphony Orchestra led by its Musical Director Junichi Hirokami and featuring piano soloist Alexander Kobrin, the current Van Cliburn Piano Competition Gold Medal Winner.
The season-opening concert will be at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, October 18 at 7:30 PM in the main theater of the Vern Riffe Center for the Arts on the campus of Shawnee State University. Series subscriptions and individual tickets are now available at the Vern Riffe Center’s McKinley Box Office at (740) 351-3600.
The symphony usually ends the season, but the CSO offered the opportunity to have Maestro Hirokami return to the VRCFA main stage following his very successful guest appearance in Portsmouth during the 2005-2006 SOPAA season. “With the inclusion of Alexander Kobrin, it was an easy decision for the SOPAA board to make,” Daehler added.
The October 18 concert program includes Kobrin performing the stunning Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto No. 2. This work, whose melodies have been used in the soundtracks of countless movies and TV shows, contains technical passages that were often considered impossible for most pianists to perform. Because of its technical demands and for its gorgeous romantic melodies, music critics have universally acclaimed the work to be one of the “Everests” of all piano compositions. The Russian-born Kobrin is known for his dynamic playing, sensitive interpretation and the enormous technical skill that he achieves with ease and mastery.
The Columbus Symphony will open the concert with Johann Strauss’ effervescent overture to his operetta “Die Fledermaus.” Maestro Hirokami and the orchestra will close the concert with the magnificent Symphony No. 4 by Johannes Brahms. This work is considered as one of the pillars of 19th century symphonic achievement.
Hirokami was named the seventh music director of the CSO in June 2006 following an extensive two-year search. His dress rehearsal for his audition concert was the concert SOPAA presented in Portsmouth in May, 2006.
Born in Tokyo in 1958, Junichi Hirokami studied conducting, piano, musicology, and viola at the prestigious Tokyo College of Music. He launched his North American career in 1996 with the Toronto Symphony, Cincinnati Symphony, Los Angeles Philharmonic, and Dallas Symphony. A resident of Japan, and travels to Columbus for CSO engagements, along with guest conductor appearances with orchestras around the world.
Born in Moscow in 1980, Alexander Kobrin began his piano studies at age five with Professor Tatiana Zelikman at the Gnessin Special Music School. At the age of twenty-five in June 2005, he was awarded the prestigious Nancy Lee and Perry R. Bass Gold Medal at the Twelfth Van Cliburn International Piano Competition which is named after the Texas-born pianist Van Cliburn who stunned the world by winning the first Tchaikovsky International Competition in Moscow in 1958. Winning this competition has long been considered to be the highest musical achievement for any instrumentalist in the world.
Immediately following his Gold Medal performance, Kobrin began his first tour to the United States including recitals at Bass Hall for the Cliburn Series, the Washington Performing Arts Society, and further debuts at La Roque d’Antheron, Ravinia Festival, Beethoven Easter Festival, Hanover Prize Winners Series, Turner Sims and at the renowned Klavier-Festival Ruhr. This season, Kobrin returns to the United States for a fifty-date tour of which his appearance in Portsmouth is one. He also teaches at the Moscow State Gnessin Academy of Music.
“All of the concerts performed by the Columbus Symphony Orchestra over the years have been wonderful musical events,” said Daehler. “We feel extremely fortunate to feature this concert as our lead off concert. It bodes well for the rest of the season.”

Cirque Des Amis to perform at Shawnee State

The Southern Ohio Performing Arts Association’s fall series continues at Shawnee State’s Vern Riffe Center for the Arts with the Cirque Des Amis, a spectacular family show combining high energy circus arts with exhibitions of daring on the trapeze, nostalgic costumes, eclectic music, evocative lighting and creative choreography.
There will be a local element in the performance scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on October 30. Cirque d’ Art, the local acrobatic studio, will be featured as part of the performance.
“They are keeping their role a secret as a surprise for the community,” Daehler offered. “Even the SOPAA Board has no idea what to expect.”
Cirque Des Amis is touring the USA following an extensive world tour. The cast of the show says they are on a mission to present audiences with a creative and innovative way of looking at a circus performance.
While watching Cirque Des Amis, audiences will be enticed by high-flying circus performers, music, magic, juggling and comedy all creatively staged to an exciting musical score.
The group’s goal is to present audiences with a high-energy performance while providing entertainment for children, teens, and adults, which, according to Daehler, meets the SOPAA Board’s own mission in bringing entertainment and arts experiences to the area.
Also scheduled for fall 2007 will be the only regional appearance of The Ten Tenors at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, November 8. Their worldwide tours have received rave reviews for their energetic, exceptionally musical and highly entertaining concerts.
“We haven’t even started talking about the winter and spring concerts which will include the national tour of Mel Brooks’ blockbuster award-winning Broadway musical, ‘The Producers,’ coming to the VRCFA on January 12,” says Daehler. “Our fall series alone would be a complete season for most arts centers, but we haven’t even begun to scratch the surface of a truly incredible performing season.”
For subscription and single ticket information, contact the McKinley Box Office at (740) 351-3600. The box office is located in the lobby of Shawnee State University’s Vern Riffe Center for the Arts. Three SSU students study abroad in Morocco

This semester three students are participating in SSU’s Center for International Program and Activities study abroad program to attend Al Akhawayn University in Ifrane, Morocco: Karla Brown and Matthew and Katie Lehnerts. All three students will be staying on campus.
The language barrier will not be so high for the students as all classes, except foreign language classes, will be taught in English. They will have many opportunities to test their language skills in Morocco, where they will get the chance to learn first-hand local customs and culture.
“I will be in Morocco during Ramadan and I plan on attempting to fast with my fellow classmates to understand why it is so important in their lives,” said Brown, a senior scheduled to graduate in May 2008 with a degree in social science.
The Lehnerts will have more of an advantage than Brown because they have been to Morocco previously and have studied the Arabic language.
“I hope to gain close relationships with Moroccans so that we can continue the cultural exchange between Americans and Moroccans,” said Matthew Lehnert, a freshman majoring in International Relations.
All of the students hope to learn more about the Islamic religion and grow from it.
“I think it is important to be educated about who Muslim people really are and not who our media tells us they are,” said Katie Lehnert, a freshman also majoring in International Relations.
The three students hope to have the experience of a lifetime while gaining academically and culturally from their stay in Morocco. Brown is scheduled to return in December and the Lehnerts will return in June.

Shawnee State University plans Children’s Halloween Carnival

(Annual event offers safe place for children)

Shawnee State University will host the annual Children’s Halloween Carnival that is open to the public and offers children and their families a safe place to dress up in costumes and celebrate the Halloween season.

Hundreds of children are expected and about 100 students will volunteer at  the carnival held in SSU’s James A. Rhodes Athletic Center from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 23.

“We expect 400 to 500 people that night,” said Tiffany Weaver, coordinator of student activities. “It’s unbelievable how many people show up.”

Every year, newborns to 12 years old are decked out in their finest costumes for the event. Tables will be set up for children to play games, win prizes and candy, to get their faces painted and bob for apples. The Science Club will have an “eerie” science project that is also educational.

Shawn E. Bear will be at the event to hand out prizes to the children and Student Government will have a fishing booth for children to fish for candy treats.

This year the “Shawnee Pumpkin Patch” will be outside on the lawn for the first time. Children who are in costume will be able to go into the Pumpkin Patch to pick a pumpkin.

“It’s something they can do with their families,” Weaver said. “They can cut out or color their own pumpkins at home.”

The SSU Student Programming Board will have a Candyland and the resident advisers will have snow cones for the children. Several other activities from various student organizations are planned for the evening.

SSU students to study in Spain

(SSU students are expanding their horizons through study abroad in Spain)

This semester five students will be heading to Spain in Shawnee State’s Center for International Programs and Activities study abroad program. Christine Arms, Michelle Ashcraft, Lejla Bilal, Brian Church and Blair Niece will be attending SSU’s sister university, Universitat Juame I, in Castellon, Spain.
Students arranged their own living quarters before leaving the United States since none of them will be staying on campus. Some of the SSU students will be living with a family and the rest plan to share a flat.
All of the students had in common a desire to diversify themselves and they will get the chance to immerse themselves in the Spanish culture. Traveling to Spain will be Arms and Ashcraft’s first trip outside of the United States.
“I really want to broaden myself so I thought what better way to do it than to study abroad in Spain,” said Arms, a junior majoring in English and communications.
Some of the students wanted to study in Spain to improve academically.
“I feel studying abroad will improve me academically by challenging my mind to think differently,” said Niece, a junior majoring in International Relations.
Students participated in two weeks of intensive Spanish training before they left the United States. The study abroad is a serious commitment for the students, most of whom had to save up money, take out loans, and rely on their families for expenses.

Interactive Digital Technology conference coming to Shawnee State

(Shawnee 5.0 will bring leaders in the field of digital game design to Shawnee State including Jerry Heneghan, founder and CEO of Virtual Heroes Inc.)

For the fifth year, Shawnee State University’s annual interactive digital technology conference, “Shawnee 5.0,” will bring together several hundred experts, educators, students, researchers, IDT developers, investors and businesses to discuss developments in the gaming simulation field.

“Shawnee 5.0 puts the spotlight of the multi-billion dollar gaming industry directly on the Ohio Valley,” said Rita Rice Morris, president of Shawnee State University. “We are working to build a 21st century economy here, and high-tech industry leaders are excited to be a part of our efforts.”

SSU has partnered with Ohio Valley Interactive Technology Alliance, Information Technology Alliance of Appalachian Ohio, the U.S. Department of Labor WIRED initiative and Ohio Department of Job and Family Services to sponsor Shawnee 5.0.

Other sponsors are Adena Ventures, Ohio Learning Network, Governor’s Office of Appalachia and Ohio University Voinovich Center.

Shawnee 5.0 partners are Ohio University GRID, AT and VITAL Labs, Washington State Community College, West Virginia University Virtual Environments Lab, University of Rio Grande and Kent State University Tuscarawas.

This year’s conference, to be held at the Vern Riffe Center for the Arts, focuses on the wide world of immersive arts and technology. While video games and entertainment get the most attention, “serious gaming” used in medicine, education, sports, defense and construction represents a much larger sector of the industry.

Keynote speaker for the event is Jerry Heneghan, founder and CEO of Virtual Heroes Inc., who will discuss the design and use of simulation computer games in education. His company creates collaborative interactive learning solutions for federal systems, commercial and healthcare markets.

“What we’re currently focused on is health care,” Heneghan said. “We think that this is going to reduce costs and improve outcomes for patients.”

Randy Brown, Heneghan’s partner and chief technical officer, will discuss multi-core processing for interactive applications.

Game development companies will exhibit their products and students will showcase the computer games, computer animation works, digital graphics and game-based art they have created.

Several workshop sessions will be available throughout the day.

·        Ohio University professors and students will present “Designing Flash Games” and “Designing Games in the Second Life Virtual World,” both for use in middle school science classrooms. Also, Ohio University will present the STEAMIE educational game engine.

·        Dr. Mike Beaver, project director at the University of Rio Grande/Ohio Valley Tech Prep Consortium, will demonstrate network troubleshooting simulation software. The presentation will cover project goals, tips on software tool selection and a demonstration of project results.

·        Roger Nelson, CEO, Kerner MotionWerx Inc. will discuss the history, trends and technologies in motion capture. A highlight of his talk will be a demonstration of a motion capture suit.

·        Brian Windsor and Peter Carswell will review the Ohio Supercomputing Center’s Summer Institute for ninth and 10th grade students, “Multi-player Game Programming: Collide This!”

·        John Bowdich will discuss “Innovating Game Design – Learning from Other Media Practices,” an analysis of the media industry and the best practices that can be utilized in the digital game world. Bowdich also will present “State of Global Digital Media,” an exploration of trends, emerging technologies and the perceived future.

·        Bowdich, Ben Schneider and Beth Novak will present the FoodMASTER project, a cross-disciplinary effort to teach third graders about health and science using food. This initiative, funded through the National Institutes for Health, compares the learning process for students using a digital learning environment with those learning in a traditional classroom.

·        Howard Dortch, of HyperKat Games, will demonstrate the new “Planetary Rover” educational game with three virtual planets.

·        Vas Patibandla will use the compound modeling toolset in 3D to demonstrate how complex surfaces, complete with mapping coordinates, can be quickly modeled and textured for high/low polygon count applications.

The Shawnee 5.0 Conference on Interactive Digital Technology will be from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 26 at the Vern Riffe Center for the Fine and Performing Arts at SSU in downtown Portsmouth.

The registration fee is $89 general admission and $39 for students. Nearby parking provides easy access and buses can pull up to the main entrance at the center.

High school students invited to learn about plastics engineering at Shawnee State

(Students participate with hands-on instruction in state-of-the-art SSU labs)

With the strong demand for those in the plastics field, SSU’s Plastics Engineering Technology Department is inviting groups of high school students to experience some of the technology used in manufacturing plastics.
Students from Meigs County advanced chemistry class will be visiting SSU from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 2 to participate in the first mini-plastics day event.
The plastics industry is one of the fastest growing in the United States, the top non-agricultural industry in Ohio, and Shawnee State is the only four-year university in the state offering a bachelor’s degree in plastics engineering.
“Each student who graduates has three or four opportunities for jobs,” said Larry Miller, associate professor of SSU’s plastics engineering technology.
Not only will the high school students learn about the potential jobs in the plastics industry, they will also learn through hands-on training in the material testing lab, extrusion lab, injection molding lab and rotational molding lab.
“They learn about how molecules get created and what the molecules are about,” he said. “What we would like to do here is give them an idea of what they do with that knowledge and actually make a product.”
Clothing, furniture, automobiles, product packaging and thousands of products are made with plastics – everything from thin plastic bags to house siding.
“What we would like to do is give the students a better idea of what plastics is all about,” Miller said.
In the material testing lab, students will perform a tensile test that will be used to determine the stress-strain relationship of a product.
“Stress is the amount of force and strain is how far it moves,” Miller said. “From that we can determine a lot of things about that material and how it can be best used.”
The mini-plastics day for high school students will give them an opportunity to determine if a plastics degree is something they would like to pursue.
“We’d like to do these mini-plastics days with more local area high schools,” Miller said.
For more information, contact Larry Miller at (740) 351-3176 or Cindy Hopkins at (740) 351-3224.

Shawnee State site of Interactive Digital Technology Conference

(Jerry Heneghan, founder and CEO of Virtual Heroes Inc., talked about the future of digital technology)

“The wave of the future,” “the immersive experience,” “state-of-the-art.” These were all heard often at Shawnee State University’s fifth annual Interactive Digital Technology Conference on Friday, Oct. 26.
More than 350 experts, educators, students, researchers, IDT developers, investors and businesses attended the conference to discuss developments in the gaming simulation field. About 250 of those were students from around the Tri-State area and throughout Ohio.
The featured speaker, Jerry Heneghan, founder and CEO of Virtual Heroes Inc., discussed many aspects of the high-tech industry and games versus simulations. Heneghan, a West Point graduate, former U.S. Army Apache pilot, was executive producer for the America’s Army Game Project at www.americasarmy.com.
“Simulations are serious attempts to accurately represent real phenomenon,” Heneghan said. “Games are deliberately simplified representations of phenomenon. One of my biggest challenges every day is determining if I am building a simulation or if I am building a game.”
Gary D. Little, president of Information Technology Alliance of Appalachian Ohio, one of the sponsors of the conference, has been attending the conferences since its inception five years ago.
“We’re real pleased with the number of high school students and college students that are attending this year,” Little said. “We want them to be involved in this and lead us into the new generation of high tech jobs.”
ITAAO is working with high schools trying to get the math and science programs to a point where it will be easier for students to transition to college into immersive technology classes.
“We’re hoping that students will go on to graduate from college in high-tech degree areas, and we’re working on building support systems to help them start their own businesses and stay in this area,” Little said.
Tom Stead, associate director of workforce development for ITAAO and retired chair of the Department of Fine, Digital and Performing Arts at SSU, was involved in the creation of immersive technology degrees at SSU, also helps organize the conference each year. He explained why he got involved in interactive digital technology.
“I can only tell you what a guy once told me: If you want to know which business is successful, go to the big-box stores like Wal-Mart, K-Mart, Best Buy and find out what takes more than a foot of space,” Stead said. “That’s a perfect indicator. Gaming is huge, a $75 billion business.”
During the break-out sessions, one company, Kerner Motionwerx, of the San Francisco, Calif., area demonstrated the use of a motion capture suit. The “cyber” suit records a person’s motions and the data is then transferred to characters in a game or movie using 3-D software.
“We were talking about a very wide range of motion capture technologies, how it relates to video games, feature films and also a lot of other technical solutions,” said Roger Nelson, founder of Kerner Motionwerx. “I’m always happy that people are interested in this and I wish we had more time.”
Bill Sams, program director with ITAAO WIRED program, said that students in the area are naturally into the interactive digital technology.
“They are creative, talented and they’ve been teaching themselves,” Sams said. “If we could show them the tremendous economic opportunities that are possible with this technology and that it is not geographically dependant. They can do it from Portsmouth just as well as they can do it from Palo Alto (Calif.) and they can afford to live in Portsmouth where in Palo Alto, it’s a million dollars to get a house in a not so good area.”

SSU’s second annual canned food drive planned

(SSU and Sodexho are teaming up to collect canned foods for Scioto County food pantries)

Shawnee State University is teaming up with Sodexho to participate in “Cans Across America,” a national stop hunger campaign. Sodexho partners with colleges and universities for which it provides dining services to collect canned foods. This year’s drive will be from 11 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 7 at the University Center.
Last year, SSU more than tripled its goal by collecting 3,689 pounds worth of canned foods.
“The support we received from the various departments, students and individuals of the community was overwhelming,” said Rachel Steele, general manager, Sodexho.
With the amount of food cans collected, SSU placed first in the district, third in the region, and seventh in the nation last year.
All the cans the drive raises will stay in Scioto County and be distributed to local food pantries. SSU has arranged for members of the food pantries to collect each of their food donations, and if members are unable to pick up their share, it will be delivered to them.
This year SSU and Sodexho hope to surpass last year’s amount. The Sodexho Stop Hunger campaign requests help not only from the SSU faculty staff and students, but from the community.
For more information or if you have any questions about the food drive, contact Rachel Steele at (740) 351-3617 or e-mail her at rsteele@shawnee.edu.
