SSU to seek input from Tri-State; plans in the works to offer
master’s degree program in library and information science

For many years, the staff members in the Graduate Center at Shawnee State University (SSU) have been working tirelessly to make graduate course opportunities available to the community by hosting master’s degree programs from other universities on the SSU campus.

Another example of this will occur in fall 2004, when SSU plans to hold an informational session to explore the possibility of hosting a master’s degree program in library and information science. The meeting will be scheduled after the Graduate Center receives input from interested individuals from the Tri-State area.

The degree, which would be offered through Kent State University’s School of Library and Information Science, has been offered at several sites other than Kent, including the Franklin Public Library, Lorain County Community College, and the North Central Ohio Computer Cooperative, although the closest it has ever come to Portsmouth is two cycles that were offered at Wellston in Jackson County.

Kent State University would decide in January 2005 on the location for upcoming distance MLIS programs. If Kent State should choose SSU as the site for an upcoming program, classes would begin either in fall 2005 or fall 2006.

Offered to all people with an undergraduate degree who graduated with a 3.0 G.P.A. or higher, the master’s degree in library and information science is one that is in demand, according to Tess Midkiff, director of the Clark Memorial Library at SSU.

“We anticipate that there will be individuals in Kentucky, Ohio, and West Virginia interested in this program,” said Midkiff. “There will be no out-of-state tuition fees, and the supply of schools offering this program is limited. It is a great way to get this type of degree closer to home.”

For more information, or to be added to a mailing list to receive the date and time for the upcoming meeting, call the Graduate Center at (740) 351-3177 or send an e-mail message to smontavon@shawnee.edu.

Shawnee State University, Ashland Community and Technical College
Sign Articulation Agreements

Agreements build on existing partnerships that allow area residents to pursue
two- and four-year degrees with ease

Tri-State area residents have more higher educational opportunities than ever before thanks to new partnerships formed today between Shawnee State University (SSU) and Ashland Community and Technical College (ACTC).

SSU and ACTC entered into an agreement this afternoon to offer “2 + 2” degree options in several program areas.  Students who take prescribed associate degree program offerings at ACTC will receive course credit for freshman and sophomore courses.  Upper level courses toward bachelor’s degrees will be taken at SSU.

Greg Adkins, Ed.D., president of ACTC, said partnerships such as this enhance higher education.

“This agreement, coupled with Tuition Reciprocity, gives area residents more and better opportunities to pursue higher education,” Adkins said.  “This concept of working together to offer students more choices enhances the educational and economic vitality, not only for ACTC and SSU and our students, but for the entire region.”

Rita Rice Morris, Ph.D., president of SSU, said she would like to see more partnerships built between colleges and universities in the region to encourage more residents in the area to go to college because “higher education changes lives.”

“The college-going rate in this region of Ohio, Kentucky, and West Virginia is lower than the state and national averages,” she said.  “Partnerships such as this serve as a reminder that SSU and ACTC are here to make a difference in the region and increase the quality of life for the area’s residents.  By providing a means for a person to attain an associate degree at ACTC and then complete a bachelor’s degree at SSU, the individual, his or her family, and the area in which he or she resides are all changed for the better.”

            The transfer agreements include:

Bachelor of Science in Social Science
            Bachelor of Science in Biology

Bachelor of Science in: Business Administration with Concentration in
                       Accounting
                       General Business
                       Health Administration
            Bachelor of Science in Chemistry

Bachelor of Science in Education with Licensure in:
                      Early Childhood
                      Early Childhood Intervention Specialist
                      Middle Childhood
                      Multiage Intervention Specialist
Bachelor of Science in Plastics Engineering Technology
Bachelor of Science in Sports Studies with Concentration in:
                      Athletic Training
                      Fitness Development
                      Sports Management
Bachelor of Science in: Nursing (RN BSN)
                     Occupational Therapy

Jim Purgerson, president of the Ashland Alliance, said the Alliance commends ACTC       and SSU on this collaboration that will certainly complement the tuition reciprocity agreement.

“High-quality education and a well-trained workforce are critical to successful economic development, and these cooperative efforts will have a long-lasting, positive impact on the entire region.”

Shawnee State University partners with University of Dayton, Marshall University to train school psychologists in southern Ohio

PORTSMOUTH, Ohio-Shawnee State University (SSU) continues its mission of meeting the needs of the region, this time by training school psychologists.

The SSU Graduate Center is teaming up with the department of counselor education and human services in the University of Dayton’s (UD) School of Education and Allied Professions to establish a partnership between SSU, UD, and Marshall University to offer UD’s school psychology program-on the SSU campus in Portsmouth, located in a region of the state where there is a shortage of such professionals.

Currently in the final planning stages, the program will launch at the start of the 2005-2006 academic year. UD will begin accepting applications this year, and plans call for enrolling two groups of approximately 12 students each.

UD faculty will teach the bulk of courses, with some help from Marshall University faculty, in space on SSU’s campus.

“More school psychologists are retiring than are coming into the system,” said Sawyer Hunley, assistant professor in the school psychology program at UD. “Nationally, there’s a major shortage, which will continue through at least 2010. The shortage puts teachers in the position of having to be all things to all people without the resources to deal with some of the most complex problems that children might have.”

Hunley has conducted a national survey of school psychologists every five years since 1989, surveying a random sample of members of the National Association of School Psychologists. Participants are asked about demographic information and professional practice activities.

“The shortage is more pronounced in southeastern Ohio, because it’s a rural area and there are no training programs offered there,” she said. “Most of the people who live there are indigenous to the area, so it’s important for us to go there and train people who actually live in the area.

SSU's Graduate Center will provide classroom space and logistical support, such as access to libraries and computer passes.

“The only universities that offer graduate degree programs in school psychology are one to two hours away from the Portsmouth area,” said Michael Field, provost and vice president for academic affairs at Shawnee State University. “There is a real need, to meet the school psychologist shortage in our region of Ohio, for educators to attain a master’s degree in school psychology. This partnership will meet that need.”

Already, Hunley said she’s received a great deal of positive feedback and many inquiries about the school psychology program.

“We looked at it from our Catholic, Marianist tradition as part of the responsibility of supporting a real need in southeastern Ohio for school psychologists to be trained,” said Dan Raisch, associate dean of administration at the School, who is helping administer the program. “It’s a real positive, primarily because that part of the state has virtually no access to recently-trained school psychologists.”

For more information about the program, call the SSU Graduate Center at (740) 351-3177.
