Fraternity at Shawnee State University
presents scholarship for books
The Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity at Shawnee State University
had a pancake breakfast fundraiser on Sunday, Sept. 13 at
the Sodexo Ballroom to raise money for a book scholarship
for an SSU male student.
Nearly 20 people applied for the $250 book scholarship. The
fraternity judged the applications on academics, GPA,
community service in high school and college, club and
organizations, ranking in high school graduation class.
“We narrowed it all down to the six principles that the TKE
goes by,” said Ryan Collins, president of TKE. “Teamwork,
brotherhood, character, service, scholarship and leadership
are the principles.”
The winner was Deandre Florence, of Covington, Ky., a
physical therapy student. Florence graduated from Morehead
with an Exercise Science degree.
The organization will be having other fundraisers for the
scholarship each semester.
“We thought this was a good way to help students pay for
their books,” Collins said. “This was the first project we
had for a scholarship and we plan to do many more.”
The TKE works security for The Ohio State University home
games to raise money. For community service, they help with
the Jaycee’s Haunted House and recently worked with the Red
Cross on their fundraiser, among other things.
