The hit play, "Fiddler on the Roof" will open the first show of the year at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 13 at Shawnee State University's Vern Riffe Center for the Arts.

Told with humor, but not a comedy, this story of generational and political struggle is set in Tsarist Russia in 1905 on the eve of the revolution.

Filled with a rousing, heartwarming score, which includes "Tradition," "Matchmaker, Matchmaker," "If I Were A Rich Man" and "Sunrise, Sunset," "Fiddler on the Roof" is a timeless classic.

The musical opens with the haunting strains of a fiddler perched precariously on a roof. Despite the danger of slipping off the roof, the fiddler merrily plays on. Tevye, a humble milkman, shuffles forth to explain that the villages, too, live precariously.

Tevye's three eldest daughters, knowing they have no dowries, consider their fates in "Matchmaker, Matchmaker." Unbeknownst to her father, Tevye's eldest daughter, Tzeitel, has fallen in love with the poor tailor of the village, Motel Kamzoil, but tradition dictates that these things be arranged. The story elevates as Tzeitel has already been arranged to marry a rich old man.

Since 1965 when the show first opened, "Fiddler on the Roof" has won numerous Tony awards.
