SSU Choirs feature Vivaldi in Annual Christmas concerts

Two Christmas Concerts are scheduled with the SSU Community Choir, the SSU Children’s Choir and the Shawnee State University Chorus and Chorale.
The Shawnee State University Chorus and Chorale, under the direction of Stan Workman, Ph.D., ushers in the holiday season with a performance of Antonio Vivaldi’s Baroque choral masterpieces, “Magnificat” and “Gloria,” accompanied by string ensemble, oboe and trumpet. They will be joined by the Shawnee Community Choir under the direction of Shirley Crothers-Marley.
For the second half of the concert, the Chorus and Chorale will focus on works of the 20th century American composers, Stephen Paulus' “Three Nativity Carols” accompanied by harp and oboe and the beloved carols of Alfred Burt.
The concert will take place at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 3 at Shawnee State University’s Vern Riffe Center for the Arts. The concert is free and open to the public.
The SSU Community Choir and the SSU Children’s Choir also will be performing at its annual “Christmas at St. Mary’s” as part of the Dickens Festival at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 5 at St. Mary’s Church at Fifth and Market streets. The concert is free and open to the public, but donations will be appreciated.
The program will feature soprano soloists Maria Minter and Marjorie Hawkins. Stephanie Scaggs will be flute soloist. A trio of Bethany Heidenreich, soprano, Erika Furey, cellist, and Kiera Ross, pianist is also featured. Part of the program will consist of selections from Vivaldi's "Gloria." Justin Wiget is the accompanist.
