Veteran’s Recognition Day planned at Shawnee State University

The 17th Annual Veterans Recognition Day is planned at Shawnee State University on Tuesday, Nov. 10 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Selby Grand Lobby in the Vern Riffe Center for the Arts and on the center’s east lawn.
“For 17 years, Veteran’s Recognition Chair, Michael Hughes and his committee have organized some truly memorable Veteran’s Recognition events,” said SSU Provost David Todt. “The program this year is in keeping with that outstanding tradition.”
More than 30 displays will be set up including veterans services, nine veterans organizations, U.S. Armed Forces recruiter displays, the Ohio Army National Guard Weapons display, military weapons display, a U.S. historical flag display and the Shawnee State University Veterans Wall.
“The displays will be providing veterans with a lot of information about services and benefits to them,” said Dr. Michael Hughes, director of SSU’s Counseling and Psychological Services and chair of the Veteran’s Day Committee. “Different veteran’s organizations will be available to talk about what they can offer veterans.”
The Recognition Ceremony will be presented from noon to 12:30 p.m. with Master of Ceremonies Sam McKibben, WNXT Radio announcer, retired veteran and member of the Ohio Military Reserve. Todt will present the opening welcome and Colonel John Harris, deputy chief of Staff Personnel, Ohio Army National Guard, will be the guest speaker.
American Legion Post 363 will present the colors and Rick Bender, SSU student will sing the “Star Spangled Banner” and “America the Beautiful.” Rev. Tom Charles will offer a prayer and moment of silence.
For more information, call Hughes at (740) 351-3539.
