Shawnee State University hosts Seminar on Suicide
Prevention
The Ohio Suicide Prevention Foundation sponsored a Suicide
Prevention Seminar on Friday, Oct. 9 at the University
Center at Shawnee State University for faculty, coaches,
first responders and student affairs staff.
Ellen
Anderson, Ph.D., professional clinical counselor, was the
facilitator and two sessions were provided. She has been
working with the coalition since 2003 and has provided
training to 68 new prevention coalitions in development
around the state of Ohio.
Faculty and
coaches were in the morning session and first responders and
student affairs in the afternoon session. Anderson talked
about the connection between depression and suicide in
college students, how to understand the special issues
around mental illness, suicidal ideation facing colleges,
risk factors, signs of suicidal behavior in students, and
how to assess risk and find help for those at risk.
A Suicide
Prevention Coalition in Scioto County was formed this year
in conjunction with the ADAMHS Board from a grant received
earlier this year.
Several Shawnee State University staff members are working
with the coalition including Robert Pratt, chief of
Security; Lisa Rhoden, Security captain; Marcie Simms,
associate director, University Student Housing; and Linda
Koenig-Brown, clinical counselor.
Cutline:
Ellen Anderson, Ph.D. speaks to first responders and student
affairs employees at Shawnee State University about
depression and suicide prevention on Friday, Oct. 9 in the
