The OU Wind Symphony
to perform at SSU

April. 6, 2012

The Ohio University Wind Symphony (formerly, Wind Ensemble) will be performing on stage at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 17 at Shawnee State University's Vern Riffe Center for the Arts.

Under the direction of Dr. Andrew Trachsel, the symphony is widely recognized as one of the country's elite wind bands, composed of the finest instrumental music students attending Ohio University's School of Music.

Trachsel serves as Director of Bands at Ohio University. He is the conductor of the Wind Symphony, University Concert Band, the music director of the New Music Ensemble and the "Under the Elms" Summer Concert Series, and is the Assistant Director for Recruitment and Scheduling for the School of Music.

He teaches courses in wind literature in addition to graduate and undergraduate conducting, and is the founding coordinator of Moving with Meaning: A Conductors Workshop, which debuted in the summer of 2011. A native of Carroll, Iowa, Dr. Trachsel received a bachelor of music education degree from Drake University and a master of music and doctor of musical arts, both in wind conducting, from the University of North Texas.

The Ohio University Wind Symphony is one of three concert bands in the School of Music. This auditioned ensemble's membership is selected from among the finest wind and percussion performers in the university.

Dedicated to the performance of outstanding repertoire from the renaissance to the present, the Wind Symphony utilizes a flexible approach to instrumentation, allowing for stylistic accuracy in the performance of wind music by the world's greatest composers.

Since 1998, the Wind Symphony has recorded four compact discs including Sounds, Shapes and Symbols (Mark Records 2001), Jubilare! (Mark Records 2003), Winds of Nagual (Naxos 2007), and Southern Harmony (Naxos 2009). To hear audio clips of the symphony, go to http://bands.osu.edu/Recordings.html.
