April 5, 2013
The Shawnee State University Geology Club will be hosting a Fantastic Fossil Festival on Sunday, April 14 from 1:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the University Center, Sodexho Ballroom. The event is free and open to the public.
The event is for all age groups and will offer the experience of learning not only about fossils but also about the geology of Ohio.
Crafts will be offered for children and they will learn about fossil forms and the types of environments where a fossil might be found. There will be a fossil dig area, where children may keep the fossils they find. Mini-lectures on a variety of topics will also be presented.
Anyone who has ever found a fossil or an unusual rock can bring it to the festival if they are not sure what it is, and the professors and students may be able to identify it.
In addition to the free activities, there will be a sale area, where fossils, minerals and rock specimens will be available for purchase. Proceeds will support geology field trips for Shawnee State University students. For more information, call Dr. Kurt Shoemaker at (740) 351-3395.
