As part of the Shawnee State University Celebration of Scholarship, an undergraduate conference featuring student research, the SSU Board of Trustees has established a Trustees Award that will be presented for the first time this year by Board Chairman Dan Mooney.
"The Celebration of Scholarship is such an outstanding event that truly showcases the type of students we have at Shawnee State and the level of scholarly research being performed here ― at the undergraduate level," Mooney commented. "As trustees, we are extremely proud of the students who participate and present their work, and the faculty mentors who make it all possible. We wanted to develop a way to further recognize these outstanding students by making it possible for them to continue their conference experience."
Mooney explained that the award will be presented to an outstanding sophomore or junior student, based on research that is investigative, project-based, inquiry-based, open-minded and/or exploratory. The selected student will receive up to $1,000 toward expenses related to attending the National Conference for Undergraduate Research or other discipline-specific or professional conference.
"Being able to attend these types of conferences at the undergraduate level greatly enriches the academic experience for our students," said Pat Spradlin, SSU English professor and coordinator of the SSU Celebration of Scholarship. "We are very glad to have this addition to our awards this year and appreciate the trustees' support of our growth. This is an incredible opportunity for our students."
This year's Celebration of Scholarship will be held on March 29 and 30, with the awards presented during a special dinner on March 29. The presentations are open to the public. A complete list of presentations may be found at www.shawnee.edu/cos.
