Shawnee State University to Host Plastics Day

Mar. 10, 2011

Plastic engineering is the largest business in Ohio and a global industry that has experienced tremendous growth over the past 20 years.

To introduce the plastics program at Shawnee State University, the Plastics Engineering Department is hosting a Plastics Day from 9:30 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. on Friday, April 8 in the Advanced Technology Center on the SSU campus in Portsmouth, Ohio.

The day will include a campus tour, parent and student interactive workshops, academic and scientific presentations and lunch.

Technically qualified personnel in the plastics industry are in demand. Students who have graduated from the program can choose just about any geographical location to find attractive positions in plastics processing operations.

Some of the employment opportunities are process engineer, project engineer, research engineer, technical sales engineer, design engineer, manufacturing engineer and quality engineer.

The program provides a solid theoretical foundation to build a thorough understanding of polymer processing operations. Students get extensive "hands on" laboratory experience using industrial scale equipment that is provided at the university.

Current students, successful alumni and faculty will be on hand to help participants learn about the program.

Sessions for this event include using computers to make designs for plastic; plastics testing using an Instron tensile testing machine; operating injection molding, extrusion machines and rotational molders to produce and take home a polymer-based plastic products like poker chips, a Frisbee or a piggy bank; meeting recent graduates to see what they do; and a campus tour.

Plastics Day qualifies as a college visit for juniors or seniors attending high school. The staff from the Office of Admission will be available to sign campus visit verification forms.

Plastics Day is free and open to the public. Registration is required and participants must be registered by March 25.
