SSU plans events for National Eating Disorder Awareness Week

Several events are planned for National Eating Disorder Awareness Week at Shawnee State University beginning Monday, Feb. 21 through Friday, Feb. 25.

The SSU Nursing students will be using MyPyramid.gov and Sodexo's "Ask the Nutritionist" Web access at Smith Coffee House at Jazzman's in the University Center from 10 a.m. to noon Monday, Feb. 21 through Wednesday, Feb. 23 and Friday, Feb. 25. Eating Disorder Screening will be held in the University Center Lobby East from Monday through Thursday, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Monday evening from 6 to 7 p.m., an Open House Art Exhibition by SSU Graphic Arts student will be on display in the University Center Lobby East with "Get Real Barbie" to be unveiled by resident advisors. Refreshments will be served.

Tuesday evening at 7 p.m. the featured speaker Stephanie Covington Armstrong is scheduled at the Sodexo Ballroom in the University Center. She is a playwright and screenwriter living in Los Angeles and author of the book, "Not All Black Girls Know How to Eat."

She has been featured on NPR and she has written for Essence, Sassy, Mademoiselle and Venice magazines, among other publications. She authored the plays "Three Stories Down," "The Outside Sisters," and "The Long Journey Home" which all have been performed in theaters in Los Angeles and New York. Her essay on bulimia, "Fear and Loathing," is included in the forthcoming anthology "The Black Body" by Meri Danquah.

Wednesday evening at 7 p.m., Kali Lucas and Brandon Lamma will present "Know Diet" in the Advanced Technology Center, Room 132. Thursday evening, Alan Siebel will present "Eating Disorder Prevention" for parents and those interested in learning more about how to help family members who may have an eating disorder.

From 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Dr. Rhoni Maxwell-Rader will present "How to Help a Friend" at lunch in the UC Bear's Den, Cub Dining Room. Attendees must purchase a meal through Sodexo at only $2 each for this event.

National Eating Disorders Week at SSU sponsored by Student Programming Board, SSU Counseling and Psychological Services, SSU Women's Center, SSU Nursing Program, Sodexo and Southern Ohio Medical Center.
