After improving their record in consecutive seasons, the Shawnee State University Women’s Soccer team hopes to progress even more in their upcoming season. After finishing 9-7-1 last season, the Bear’s hope for this season to be their third winning season in school history. “We look to improve on a program best from last season, and with the addition of eight new quality players we should be able to continue getting stronger each year,” commented third year coach Rob Appell.

In addition to eight freshmen the Bear’s return 12 players from last year’s squad. Of those returning to the squad, four players earned AMC recognition. Junior goal keeper Sam Rolsen (Cincinnati, OH) and sophomore midfielder Kelly Bowles (Cincinnati, OH) both earned 2nd team honors, while junior defender Savoeung Ien (Columbus, OH) and sophomore midfielder Kat Westendorf (Amelia, OH) were honorable mention ALL-AMC.

Also returning are juniors Staci White (Chillicothe, OH), Courtney Moore (Georgetown, OH), and Lacie Abella (Zanesville, OH), and sophomores Lizzie Simpson (Mt. Orab, OH), Cindi Hay (Minford, OH), Courtney Shackelford (Loveland, OH), and Maria Hartke (Tipp City, OH).

Freshman include defenders Brooke Warner (Lynchburg, OH), Brittany Nidy (Hartville, OH), Marie-Elana Kennedy (Canton, OH), and midfielders Bailey Hill (Fayetteville, OH),  Danielle Morgan (Waverly, OH), and Ali Tomazic (Lakewood, OH).

“We have a good mix of young talent and returners who have gelled well throughout our off season workouts. The team we have assembled can be as successful, if not more, than past teams have been,” said Coach Appell.

Shawnee State opens the 2008 season at home on Wednesday, Septemeber 3 versus West Virginia Tech. Game time is 3:30 p.m. at Shawnee State Field.
