After improving their record in
consecutive seasons, the Shawnee State University Women’s Soccer
team hopes to progress even more in their upcoming season. After
finishing 9-7-1 last season, the Bear’s hope for this season to be
their third winning season in school history. “We look to improve on
a program best from last season, and with the addition of eight new
quality players we should be able to continue getting stronger each
year,” commented third year coach Rob Appell.
In addition to eight freshmen
the Bear’s return 12 players from last year’s squad. Of those
returning to the squad, four players earned AMC recognition. Junior
goal keeper Sam Rolsen (Cincinnati, OH) and sophomore midfielder
Kelly Bowles (Cincinnati, OH) both earned 2nd team
honors, while junior defender Savoeung Ien (Columbus, OH) and
sophomore midfielder Kat Westendorf (Amelia, OH) were honorable
mention ALL-AMC.
Also returning are juniors Staci
White (Chillicothe, OH), Courtney Moore (Georgetown, OH), and Lacie
Abella (Zanesville, OH), and sophomores Lizzie Simpson (Mt. Orab,
OH), Cindi Hay (Minford, OH), Courtney Shackelford (Loveland, OH),
and Maria Hartke (Tipp City, OH).
Freshman include defenders
Brooke Warner (Lynchburg, OH), Brittany Nidy (Hartville, OH), Marie-Elana
Kennedy (Canton, OH), and midfielders Bailey Hill (Fayetteville,
OH), Danielle Morgan (Waverly, OH), and Ali Tomazic (Lakewood, OH).
“We have a good mix of young
talent and returners who have gelled well throughout our off season
workouts. The team we have assembled can be as successful, if not
more, than past teams have been,” said Coach Appell.
Shawnee State opens the 2008
season at home on Wednesday, Septemeber 3 versus West Virginia Tech.
