The Shawnee State volleyball team accomplished many
goals last season. The 2008 team produced its best record in school
history with a mark of 38 wins and 3 losses, produced its first
All-American, won the American Mideast Conference Tournament,
received a bid to the NAIA National Tournament, broke numerous
school records; and for a team that lost three players, what do they
want? More!
The Bears lost three players from last season’s
roster to graduation, including All-American, 1st Team
All-AMC honoree, and 1st Team Region IX player, Becca
Day. The Bears also lost NAIA Scholar Athlete and outside hitter
Samantha Emler, as well as defensive specialist and back-up setter
Kendra Massie.
The Shawnee State volleyball team looks to keep
pushing forward to continue their success on the floor. Even though
the Bears lost three key players from last season’s squad, the Bears
return five of its six starters. At the setting position and
leading the offense is two-year starter and 2nd Team All-AMC
player, junior Haley Halcomb (Frankfort, OH). Halcomb broke the
school-record for career assists last season and look to continue
the tally as she has accumulated 2,379 during her two year career.
Junior Jami Turrill (Albany, OH), a 3rd Team All-AMC
player, will lead the attack for the Bears as middle hitter. Junior
Tiffany Dailey (Chillicothe, OH) will lead the defense for Shawnee
State. Dailey earned 3rd Team All-AMC recognition last
season and holds SSU’s record for digs in a season with 943, but it
just 20 digs shy of the school record that is currently held by
Becca Day. Junior Heather Koehler (Russellville, OH) and senior
Megan Wills (Lancaster, OH) will help guide the Bears as outside
hitters again this season. Junior Chelsea Howard (Beaver, OH) will
help Turrill out in the middle., while senior Anicca Miller
(Arcanum, OH) and sophomore Janine Grey (Riverside, CA) will provide
the Bears more hitting talent. Freshman Jessica Winkelman, who
redshirted last season due to injury, returns to provide depth in
the back row. New to the Bears’ squad is transfer Shaye Berry (Minford,OH)
and freshmen Kim Rosen (Harrison, OH) and Alex Pohl (Loveland, OH).
Each of them has really made an impact on the team in a short period
of time.
Head Coach Kristy Kamer has produced a 68-38 record
in her three-year tenure at Shawnee State. “The ladies have been
working extremely hard in the off season to get themselves ready for
a much tougher schedule this year,” said Kamer. “I am excited to
see how all their off season work will pay off. They have high
expectations for this season and I don’t see them letting down. It
has been fun to see everyone come together and I look forward to
much success this season.” |
