1999 Women's Basketball
National Championship Team

The Shawnee State University Athletic Hall of Fame Class of 2009 included the 1999 Women’s Basketball National Championship Team.  The team was inducted to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the Bears 31-2 National Championship season.

Members of the 1999 Women’s Basketball Team include NAIA National Player of the Year Erica Hayes, Brandi Baker, Carrie Brisker, Mamie Brisker, Becky Holden, Cheri Griffith, Brandy Humphrey, Susie Kline, Brandi Munn, Steffani Slone, Kelli Smith and Sarah Ward. 

The 1999 Women’s Basketball Team won the National Championship after defeating St. Francis College 80-65 in the Championship game.  They posted an overall record of 31-2 on the season and were American Mideast Conference regular season Champions.

The induction ceremony took place on Saturday, January 24th in conjunction with Shawnee State Homecoming festivities. [Gallery of pictures]

 
Matt Ashkettle -- Baseball 1994-1997
Matt Ashkettle's career batting average of .406 is a Shawnee State record.  He collected 152 hits including 11 homeruns to go along with 114 RBI.  He earned all-conference recognition in 1996 and 1997.
 
Brandi Baker -- Basketball 1996-2000
Brandi Baker twice earned All-American Mideast Conference and was named an NAIA All-American for the 1999-2000 season.  In Addition, she earned AMC and NAIA All-Scholar Athlete recognition as a junior and senior.  She currently stands 4th on the all-time scoring list with 1,697 points and 4th on the all-time rebound list with 874.  Brandi was inducted in 2006.
 
Carrie Brisker-Purcell -- Basketball 1995-1999

Carrie twice earned All-American Mideast Conference and NAIA All-Scholar Athlete honors.  She currently stands 11th on the all-time scoring list with 1,201 points.   

 
 
Tony Brown -- Golf 1993-1997
Tony Brown played 82 rounds of golf and tallied a 79.8 scoring average.  He earned All-Conference and All-American honors in 1997.  He led the Bears to a conference championship in 1997 as well as an appearance in the NAIA National Tournament.  Tony was inducted in 2003.
 
Amy Cole-McGuire -- Softball 1990-1994
During that span, Amy Cole-McGuire was a 4-time All-Mid-Ohio Conference selection and 4-time NAIA All-District honoree.  Amy had a career fielding percentage of .924 at the shortstop position.  She had a career batting average of .333.  In addition to softball, Amy played basketball for two seasons.  Amy was inducted into the Hall with the Inaugural Class in 2000.
 
Ralph Cole -- Head Coach Softball
Ralph Cole took over as head coach of the Shawnee State Softball Team in 1992 after serving two years as assistant coach.  In the thirteen seasons since taking over, Cole has compiled a 385-160 record.  He has led the Bears to 9 conference championships and 9 appearances in the NAIA National Tournament.  He earned Conference Coach of the Year Honors in 1996, the same year Shawnee State was the runner up at the National Tournament.   He was inducted in 2005.
 
Tiffany Clayton -- Basketball 1991-1995
Tiffany Clayton, a 1995 graduate, stood out on the hardwood from 1991-1995 and still holds Shawnee State's career assists record with 566.  She finished her career 5th on Shawnee State's all-time scoring roster with 1,050 points.  She still holds many Shawnee State records, including a season record of 3-point field goal percentage of 46% as well as 3-point field goals made in a game with eight and 3-point field goals attempts in a game with 14.  She was named to the MOC All-Freshman Team and as a sophomore named to the All-NAIA District 22 Division I Team.  During her senior season she was named 2nd Team All-MOS and NAIA Division II Honorable Mention.  Tiffany was inducted in 2010. 
 
Eugene Collins
-- Assistant Basketball Coach -- Home Team Award
 
Collins is a graduate of Shawnee State University and played basketball from 1984 to 1986.  Collins held the position of Assistant Head Coach from 1990 to 2007.
 
Kim Danner -- Basketball 1988-1991
Kim Danner was named to the NAIA All-District team three times.  She earned Kodak All-American honors and NAIA All-Scholar Athlete honors in 1991.  She currently ranks fifth on Shawnee State's all-time scoring list with 1,289 points.  Kim was inducted with the inaugural class in 2000.
 
Brandon Doss -- Baseball 1997-2000
Brandon Doss was a two-time All-American Mideast Conference selection during his career.  He earned NAIA All-American honors as a senior in 2000.  He finished his career with school records of 262 hits, 43 homeruns, and 185 RBI.  He holds 8 additional Shawnee State Baseball records.  Brandon was inducted in 2006.
 
Aaron Duncan -- Baseball 1993-1996
Aaron Duncan had a .374 career batting average and scored 97 career runs.  He twice earned 1st Team All-Conference and NAIA All-Scholar Athlete honors.  He is a member of the induction class of 2002.  
 
Bryan Dyer -- Basketball 1991-1995
Bryan Dyer finished his career with 887 points which ranks 10th on Shawnee State’s All-Time Scoring List. His 887 career rebounds make him the leading rebounder in Shawnee State History. He also holds the record for most rebounds in a season (436 in 1994 -1995) and for most rebounds in a game (26). Bryan was an All-Conference selection in 1995.  He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2001.
 
Leah Fickell -- Softball 1994-1997
Leah Fickell was a two-time all-conference player.  She also earned All-MOC Scholar Athlete and NAIA All-American Scholar Athlete honors in 1996.  She played on four conference championship teams and the 1996 NAIA National Runner-Up team.  She was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2003.
 
Brian Harrison -- Baseball 1999-2000

Brian holds the school record for homeruns (19) and RBI (87) in a season.  He completed his career with 36 homeruns and 155 RBI.  He earned All-American Mideast Conference recognition in 1999 and 2000.  In 2000, he helped lead the Bears to a 5th place finish in the NAIA World Series and was named 2nd Team NAIA All-American. Brian was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2008.

Erica Hayes -- Basketball 1995-1999
Erica Hayes earned all-conference honors each of her four seasons at SSU including the Conference Player of the Year Award in 1999.  She was a two-time All-American and the NAIA Division II Player of the Year in 1999 when she led the Bears to a National Championship.  She is second on the SSU’s all-time scoring list with 2184 points.  She holds eight school records including most rebounds in a career with 1193.  She was inducted in 2005.
 
Ralph Kavanaugh -- Equipment Manager -- Home Team Award
The Home Team Award is meant to recognize special service, spirit, and loyalty to Shawnee State Athletics.  Ralph Kavanaugh, longtime equipment manager for Shawnee State Athletics, will received the inaugural award in 2005.  “Over the years, many of our athletes have referred to Ralph as Home Team,” said SSU Athletics Director Jim Arnzen.  “He is easily one of the most popular people on campus and he is very worthy of this award.”
 
Kari Koehn -- Softball 1995-1997
Kari Koehn earned All-MOC honors three times in her career, and was named 1st Team All-American in 1997 and 1998.  She earned MOC and NAIA All-Scholar Athlete honors in 1997.  She had a career batting average of .388.  She had 51 doubles, 13 triples, and 11 homeruns to go along with 142 career RBI’s.   She helped lead the Bears to 4 consecutive MOC titles during her career.
 
Molly Linville-Shultz -- Basketball 1992-1996
Molly Linville-Shultz scored 1,027 career points and dished out 426 career assists.  She earned 1st Team All-Conference honors in 1996.  She is a member of the 2002 induction class.  
 
Roger Merb -- Men's Golf Coach
Roger Merb has coached the men’s golf team since its inception in 1989.  He has led the Bears to 30 tournament victories including the Mid-Ohio Conference Championship in 1997.  That 1997 team went on to place 11th at the NAIA National Tournament.  He was named the MOC Golf Coach of the Year in 1997.
 
Travis Merry -- Basketball 1990-1994
Travis Merry is the fourth leading scorer in Shawnee State history with 1,117 points. He holds the career record for assists (579) and steals (177). He also holds the record for most assists in a season (205 in 1993-1994) and most assists in a game (15). Travis was selected to the NAIA All-Scholar Athlete Team in 1994.  He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2001.
 
Brandy Orsborne Fyffe -- Softball 1998-2001
2001 graduate Brandy Orsborne excelled on the softball field from 1998 to 2001.  During her career she accumulated a batting average of .369 with 109 runs and 94 RBI's.  On the mound, she compiled a 10-3 record with a 3.42 ERA.  As a senior, Orsborne was named Conference Player of the Year and 2nd Team All-American.  Orsborne earned all-conference recognition three times and was also named an NAIA Scholar Athlete and Conference Scholar Athlete twice while at Shawnee State.  Brandy was inducted in 2011.
 
Randall Pennington -- Basketball 1991-1992, 1993-1995
Randall Pennington is the second leading scorer in Shawnee State history with 1,326 points. He also holds the Shawnee State record for field goals made in a career (543) and free throws made in a career (232). He was an All-Conference selection in 1994 and 1995. Randall was an All-American honoree in 1995.  He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2001.
 
Crystal Pickelsimer -- Softball 1997-2000
Crystal Pickelsimer was a four-time All-American Mideast Conference honoree and earned NAIA All-American honors as a junior and senior.  She was the American Mideast Conference Player of the Year in 2000.  She had a career-batting average of .431 to go along with a school record 65 doubles and 18 triples.  She also holds the school record for doubles in a season with 22 and walks in a career with 78.  Crystal was inducted in 2006.
 
Jayson Pratt -- Baseball 1998-2000

Jayson was a three-time All-American Mideast Conference selection.  He was the American Mideast Conference Player of the Year in 1998.  He holds the school record for season batting average with .463 and season slugging percentage at .560%.

 
Lanny Rice -- Golf 1995-1998
Lanny Rice in 83 rounds of golf posted a 77.4 average.  He helped lead the Bears to 12 tournament wins over the course of his career.  He won six individual tournament titles, including the 1995 MOC Championship in 1995.  He earned All-MOC honors twice, and was named the MOC Player of the Year in 1995.  He was twice named to the MOC and NAIA All-Scholar Athlete Teams.
 
Kirk Ruggles -- Basketball 1994-1998

Kirk currently stands 6th on the all-time scoring list with 1,256 points.  He earned 2nd Team All-American Mideast Conference honors as a junior. 

 
Gregg Smith -- Women's Basketball Assistant Coach

 Gregg Smith has been the Assistant Women’s Basketball Coach since the programs inception in 1988.  In 18 year with Gregg on the sidelines, the Bears have compiled a 469-116 record.  The Bears have won 8 conference championships, 5 conference tournament championships and made 12 appearances in the NAIA Division II National Championship.

 
Robin Hagen-Smith -- Women's Basketball Coach

Robin Hagen-Smith is entering her nineteenth year as Women’s Head Basketball Coach at Shawnee State University. In the past eight years, she has taken the Bears to the national competition finishing with three Sweet Sixteen's, two Elite Eight's, one Final Four, and a National Championship in 1999. She has led the Bears to the conference championship each of the past five seasons as well as in 1992 and 1994. She has a career record of 412-124. Robin has received many coaching awards that include MOC and AMC Coach of the Year (5 times), 1997-98 WBCA IKON Coach of the Year, 1998-99 NAIA National Coach of the Year, and 1998-99 Dispatch Women’s Ohio College Basketball Coach of the Year.

Hagen-Smith’s basketball success at SSU began in 1979 when she played for Shawnee State Community College before transferring in 1981 to the University of Rio Grande.  She was inducted into the Hall with the Inaugural Class in 2000.

 
Bryan Sturgell -- Golf 1995-1995

Bryan boasted a 76.9 scoring average over the course of 93 rounds.  He won 9 tournaments and was named to a dozen all-tournament teams.  He earned all-conference recognition in 1996, 1998, and 1999. Bryan was inducted into the Hall in 2008.

   
Jeff Suter -- Soccer 1991-1993
Jeff Suter holds the school records for most goals in a season (18); most goals in a career (42); most assists in a season (12); most assists in a career (27); most points in a season (48); and most points in a career (111).  He earned 2nd Team All-Conference honors in 1993.  Jeff was inducted into the Hall in 2002.  
 
Renee Walls-Davis -- Basketball/Softball
1992-1996

Renee has scored Renee scored 1,099 points in basketball and currently stands 14th on Shawnee State’s all-time scoring list.  She holds the Shawnee State record for most 3-point field goals made in a season with 92.  On the softball diamond, Renee had a career batting average of .340.  For her career, she had 144 hits, scored 121 runs, and drove in 101 runs.  She was a 1st Team All-Conference selection in 1995 and 1996.  She was named 1st Team All-American in 1995. Renee was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2008.

 
Harry Weinbrecht -- Administrator
Harry Weinbrecht was a member of the Shawnee State faculty from 1964 to 2000.  He coached OU-Portsmouth (later Shawnee State Community College) to 5 straight branch championships.  In 1976 he coached Shawnee State Community College to a 29-2 season.  He served as athletic director until 1992, and he oversaw the transition from Junior College association to the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics.  He was inducted into the Hall with the Inaugural Class of 2000.
 
Jenni Wessel -- Basketball 1991-1995
Jenni Wessel is the all-time leading scorer in SSU history with 2,280 points. She holds the SSU records for points in a game (48); field goals made in a career (977); field goals made in a game (23); and rebounds in a game (20). Her .594 career field goal percentage and 1,092 career rebounds rank second in Shawnee State History. The 23 field goals made against Urbana University on January 15, 1994, stands as the NAIA Division II national record. Jenni was the 1995 Conference Player of the Year. She earned All-American Honors in 1994 and 1995.  Jenni was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2001.
 
Kim White-Merb -- Softball 1994-1997
Kim White currently holds 12 Shawnee State Softball records.  She hit 42 homeruns, had 213 RBI, scored 204 runs, and hit for a .458 batting average.  She helped lead the Bears to a National Runner-Up finish in 1996.  She was the conference player of the year four consecutive seasons and the NAIA Player of the Year in 1997.  She earned All-American honors all four years she played.  She was inducted to the Hall of Fame in 2003.
 
Brian Williams -- Basketball 1988-1990
Brian Williams finished his career with 972 points and 426 rebounds.  He currently holds the Shawnee State record for most blocked shots in a season (77) and most blocked shots in a career (122).  Brian was a two-time NAIA All-District selection.  He was inducted into the Hall with the Inaugural Class in 2000.
 
John Williams -- Cross Country 2000-2003
 
Williams is a two-time All-American Mideast Conference runner and two time NAIA National Qualifier.  During his time at Shawnee State he held the fastest time of any runner (25:45) and currently is in the top five runners ever at Shawnee State and 13th on the all-time fastest time list.  He was a five-time meet medalist during his stellar career at Shawnee State.  John was inducted into the Hall in 2010. 
 
Tracy Williams-Riehl -- Basketball 1989-1992
Tracy Williams-Riehl finished her career with 1,176 points.  In 1992 she was named the Mid-Ohio Conference Player of the Year.  She was also named to the Kodak All-American Team.  She currently holds the Shawnee State records for most free throws made in a game (14), most steals in a game (9), and most steals in a season (96).  Tracy was inducted into the Hall with the Inaugural Class in 2000. 
 
WNXT: Roger Gray & Dale Hamilton
-- Radio Broadcasters -- Home Team Award
 

Since Shawnee State’s transition to the NAIA in 1988, WNXT’s Roger Gray and Dale Hamilton have combined to broadcast nearly 800 Shawnee State University Athletic Contests.  WNXT’s continued coverage and support has allowed fans to follow the Bears at home, on the road, and at post-season competitions across the country.
