SSU BASEBALL ADDS TWENTY-SEVEN
JUNE 10, 2008

The Shawnee State University Baseball Team has signed a 27-member recruiting class.  The group of incoming players includes 23 freshmen and 4 transfers.

Randy Ratcliff, an infielder from Green High School, was a 2nd Team All-SOC selection.  He hit .400 as a senior and had 9 extra base hits including 1 homerun.  “Randy came to our camp and we liked him a great deal,” said SSU head coach Ted Tom.

Adam Wamsley, a shortstop and pitcher from Wheelersburg High School, was a 1st Team All-SOC and All-Southeast District performer.  He was also named to the Mizuno Ohio All-State Team.  “Adam is a fine athlete and should compete for a spot in the rotation and the starting shortstop role,” said Tom.  “He’s one of the fiercest competitors we’ve seen.”

Dustin Cook, an outfielder an pitcher from Wheelersburg High School, was twice named 2nd Team All-SOC and was 2nd Team All-District as a senior.  “Dustin has a powerful arm and has a good chance to become our closer.  He features a good fastball and exceptional slider.  We’ll be counting on him to make tough outs in critical situations.”

Wes Lyons, a third baseman from Wheelersburg High School, will also play soccer at Shawnee State.  He hit .390 with 4 homeruns as a senior.  “Wes goes about his business the right way.  He’s always in control of himself and has a knack for being in the right place at the right time.”

Nick Ball, a catcher from Manchester High School, was an All-Conference selection as a senior.  He currently holds his high school record for most stolen bases in a game with six.  “Nick is a physical player with a big time arm.  He hits for good power from the left side of the plate.  We expect him to make an immediate impact on our lineup.

Clay Dennewitz, a left hand pitcher from Southeastern High School, was four-year letter winner in baseball and two-year letter winner in golf.  He played for former SSU baseball standout Tim Lockwood.  Over the course of his career, he pitched 138 innings recording while recording 268 strikeouts and allowing just 77 hits.  “Clay has really good stuff and has the ability to compete for a spot in our rotation right out of the gate.”

Wes Shumaker, a catcher form Liberty Center High School, is a two-time All-NWOAL selection.  In addition to winning four letters in baseball, he lettered twice in football.  “Wes has good arm strength and has shown the ability to make adjustments at the plate.  He can play several positions, but we expect him to contribute most behind the plate.”

Phillip Martin, a left hand pitcher from Eastern Brown High School, was a 1st Team All-SHAC selection and honorable mention All-District honoree.  He threw a 37-pitch no-hitter against Fayetteville during his senior season.  “We’re very excited Phillip has decided to continue his baseball career at Shawnee State.  He had great success in high school and we expect him to continue to develop over the next four years.”

Tyler Burns, a second baseman from Eastern Brown High School, earned 1st Team All-SHL and All-District recognition.  He hit .454 as a sophomore and .408 as a senior.  “Tyler is a solid infielder who had a great deal of success in high school.  He brings a great deal of athleticism to the team.”

Tyler Weisel, a catcher from Canton Central Catholic, hit .300 and threw out 50% of base runners attempting to steal.  “Tyler is a natural born leader who does everything right on the field.  He has a chance to be a big time impact player for us.”

Jacob Dorow is a left hand pitcher from Elyria High School.  He lettered twice in baseball and once in golf.  “Jacob gives adds some much needed depth to the pitching staff.  He doesn’t have overpowering stuff, but knows how to pitch.  We have high expectations for him as he improves his strength and conditioning.”

Cody Riggs is a left hand pitcher from Fairfield High School.  He compiled an 8-3 record with 2 saves over the past two seasons.  “Cody is not overpowering, but he has a very good slider that will give hitters fits.  With improved strength and conditioning, he will compete for a spot in the rotation.”

Kyle Compton, a left hand pitcher from Amanda-Clearcreek High School, was a 1st team all-league and honorable mention all-district selection.  As a senior, he posted a 5-3 record with an ERA of 2.35.  He recorded 47 strikeouts in just 35 innings of work.  “Kyle comes in with a chance to break into the rotation.  He has a good arm and seems to have the innate ability to make the pitches he needs to get outs in multiple ways.  We expect great things from him over the next four years.”

Cody Saylor is a right hand pitcher from Mason High School.  He posted an 8-2 record with a 1.86 ERA during his junior season.  He battled injury much of his senior year.  “Cody has a power pitcher’s body at 6’3” and 240 pounds.  We expect he will add strength and really grow into his body in the coming years.  He could compete for a spot in the rotation or come out of the bullpen.”

Cameron McGee is a right hand pitcher from Edgewood High School.  He was four-year letter winner in baseball.  “Cameron is a power arm with a live fastball and very good slurve.  Based on his stuff and his aggressiveness, he has a shot at a top spot in our rotation.”

Gary Korn is a left hand pitcher from Miamisburg High School.  “Gary is yet another pitcher with a chance to crack the rotation.  He has very good stuff with an exceptionally deceptive changeup.  His success depends on the development of his breaking ball.”

Austin May, a right hand pitcher and utility player from Shawnee High School, was a 1st Team All-CBC and All-Clark County selection as a senior.  He had a 5-4 record with an ERA of 3.10.  “Austin might have more untapped potential than any player on the roster.  He was three-sport star at Shawnee, and is just now beginning to focus exclusively on baseball.”

Sam Perkins is a right hand pitcher from New Richmond High School.  During his junior season, he posted a 6-1 record with a 2.20 ERA and 58 strikeouts and earned 2nd Team All-SBAAC recognition.  “Sam is extremely talented.  He has an emerging power arm and showcases the best curveball in our recruiting class.”

Matt Scholl is a right hand pitcher and catcher from Teays Valley High School.  He was All-Buckeye Mid State League honorable mention as a senior when he hit .300 with a pair of homeruns.  “Matt provides some additional depth at catcher, but he also shows a great deal of potential on the mound.  He has a lively fastball and good breaking ball and change up.  If he can consistently throw strikes, he’ll be an immediate asset in the bullpen.”

Collin Uhrig is a right hand pitcher and utility player from Adena High School.  “Collin may be the best all around athlete in the class.  While he primarily played shortstop in high school, he can legitimately play eight positions on the field.  He has the potential to be a high average, high power type of hitter.  He also has an explosive fastball and good curveball.”

Jordan Walker, an infielder from Western Hills High School, was a 1st Team All-Cincinnati Metro Athletic Conference as a senior.  He hit .415 with three homeruns to go along with 19 stolen bases.  “Jordan is a solid left handed hitter and can really run.  His speed and hitting ability will make him a dangerous threat in the lineup.”

Austin Dunfee, a right hand pitcher from Meigs High School, earned 1st Team All-Tri Valley Conference and 1st Team All-Southeast District recognition as a senior.  He posted a 7-4 record with 1 save and an ERA of 2.21 as a senior.  He struck out 86 batters in 69 2/3 innings of work.  “Austin has great command of his curveball.  He showed a live arm and proved he can win ball games.  He’s also durable as he tossed 17 complete games over the course of his career.”

Alex Wamsley, an infielder and right hand pitcher from Wheelersburg High School, is the older brother of SSU signee Adam Wamsley.  “Alex took a year away from baseball after high school.  He played in an exceptional program at Wheelersburg and should pick up right where he left off.”

Caullan Owens is a right hand pitcher out of Kalamazoo Valley Community College.  He posted a 2-2 record with a 4.94 ERA and 27 strikeouts as a sophomore.  “Caullan has an extremely talented power arm and he is still learning how to pitch.  He has a live fastball and the beginnings of a plus breaking ball.”

Tyler Roberson is a right hand pitcher out of Sinclair Community College.  He was 1-0 with 2 saves and an ERA of 2.21 as a freshman.  He was 4-0 with five saves and an ERA of 0.87 as a sophomore.  “Tyler’s stuff is as good as anyone’s we have and he fills the strike zone with three different pitches.  He should also provide some leadership to a very young staff.”

David Bentley is an outfielder and right hand pitcher out of Greenup County High School.  He transfers to SSU after one season at Transylvania University.  “David will be one of the fastest players on the roster.  He has great arm strength and should provide some bullpen depth.”

Kenta Sato is a senior transfer out of the University of Rio Grande.  He is an infielder and right hand pitcher.  “Kenta has a chance to one of the best defensive infielders we’ve had at Shawnee State.  He has a dependable arm out of the bullpen as well.  He is one of the most driven individuals I have ever coached.”

“We are extremely excited about this recruiting class,” said Coach Tom.  “Coach Chris Moore has done an outstanding job of identifying the best student-athletes for our program.  This is a diverse class and fills a number of needs.  Many of these young men will be able to step in right away and make an immediate impact.  I truly believe these men will play an integral role in putting Shawnee State Baseball back in the spotlight.”

Shawnee State competes in the American Mideast Conference.  The Bears compiled a record of 16-29 (10-16 AMC) in the 2008 season.
