16th ANNUAL FALL BEAR RUN TO TAKE PLACE SEPTEMBER 22

The 16th Annual Fall Bear Run is set to take place
September 22 at 6:00 p.m. The race is free to all students
(elementary, secondary, and Shawnee State), Shawnee State
faculty/staff and their families, Shawnee State alumni, and Golden
Bears. The entry fee is $10.00 for those who pre-register
before September 20 at noon. Those registering on the day of
the race will have to pay $15.00.

Volleyball
TURRILL LEADS BEARS TO
VICTORY OVER CAPITAL
8/27/2010
The Shawnee State volleyball team swept Capital in three
match in non-conference action on Wednesday evening. The Bears
improve their overall record to 4-1.
In set one, Shawnee State
jumped out to an early 15-6 lead. The two teams then exchanged
points back and forth, before Shawnee State closed the door on the
Crusaders taking set one 25-19. The Crusaders kept set two
close. After a 9-9 tie, Shawnee State took control to go onto
win the set 25-18. Shawnee State built a 16-11 lead in the
third set only to watch it drizzle away. Capital fought back
taking an 18-17 lead. The lead volleyed back and forth and
knotted at 21-21. Freshman Kirsti Yates then served up two
points for the Bears, giving them the 23-21 advantage. Capital
sided out making the score 23-22, but Shawnee State answered for
game point and then put it away with a kill by senior Jami Turrill.
Turrill had a stellar game
as she tallied a triple-double, slamming down a career-high 27 kills
and 11 blocks to go along with 15 digs. Senior Heather Koehler
added nine kills and career-high eight blocks. Sophomore Alex
Pohl contributed a career-high 11 blocks and five kills.
Senior Haley Halcomb set up 42 assists. Tiffany Dailey led the
Bears' defense with 18 digs.
Shawnee State travels to
the Taylor Invitational this weekend. Friday the Bears face a
tough #10 Taylor squad at 3:00 p.m., followed by St. Ambrose at 5:00
p.m. Saturday Shawnee State faces Aquinas at 10:00 a.m. and
then Marian at 12:00 p.m. The Bears return home on Thursday,
September 16 for a conference match against the University of the
Cumberlands. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m. |

Men's Basketball
MEN'S BASKETBALL TO HOLD TRY-OUT
9/1/2010
The men's basketball team will hold tryouts on Thursday,
September 9 from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. in the James A.
Rhodes Center.
All first-time
freshmen must meet two of the three entry level
requirements:
1.)
A score of 18
on the ACT or 860 on the SAT; and/or
2.)
An overall
high school grade point average of 2.00 on a 4.00 scale;
and/or
3.)
Graduating in
the top half of the student's high school graduation class.
Eligibility
requirements for upperclassmen:
1.) Must
be enrolled in a minimum of 12 hours of classes
2.) Must have passed 24 hours in the last two semesters
3.) Juniors must have passed 48 overall hours and obtained a
2.0 GPA
4.) Seniors must have passed 72 overall hours and obtained a
2.0 GPA |

Intramural Flag Football rosters are Friday, September 3
at noon in the University Center. Teams must have at
least 10 players and a captain. Games will begin on
Sunday, September 12.

HALCOMB NAMED MSC SETTER OF
THE WEEK
8/31/2010
Senior Haley Halcomb (Frankfort, OH) was named Mid-South
Conference Setter of the Week. Halcomb averaged 11.58 assists
and three digs per game leading the Bears to a 3-1 start on the
season.
Halcomb, recorded a
double-double in the Bears sweep over Point Park as she tallied 30
assists and 18 digs. She also recorded a double-double in
Shawnee State's loss to Northwestern Ohio recording 41 assists and
10 digs. She also added two service aces and three solo blocks
on the week. |

SHOWCASE CAMP

Shawnee State University Baseball Head
Coach Ted Tom is pleased to announce Sunday October 17th
as the date for the fourth annual Fall Showcase Camp right here at
Branch Rickey Park in Portsmouth, OH. The Bears are coming off a
historical season in which they won their first ever regular season
American Mideast Conference championship and saw Coach Tom named AMC
Coach of the Year. Shawnee State is looking to continue their
success by recruiting players who can help them right away and these
camps have served as a great recruiting tool as evidenced by the 10
former campers that are currently on the roster. The cost for the
camp is $60 for all players and registration will begin on the 17th
at 9:30 a.m. All Shawnee State camps are run by all members of the

Shawnee State University
Baseball Head Coach Ted Tom is pleased to announce December 20th-22nd
as the dates for the very first Shawnee State University Youth
Baseball Camp. This is a fantastic opportunity for boys and girls
between the ages of 6-14 to learn the fundamental building blocks of
baseball directly from the SSU coaching staff and players. Camp
will run each day from 9am until noon featuring defensive
instruction for infield and outfield play, offensive instruction,
and pitching and catching. The Bears are coming off a historical
season in which they won their first ever regular season American
Mideast Conference championship and saw Coach Tom named AMC Coach of
the Year. Each camper will receive in-depth instruction on his or
her play in what promises to be a fun and informative camp. Cost

COUNTRY PRESEASON RANKED #3

The Shawnee State cross country team received a #3 ranking
in the NAIA Men's Cross Country Preseason Coaches' Top 25
Poll. The poll was released Wednesday and the Bears' are the
only Mid-South Conference team represented. Malone, who was
the 2009 NAIA National Champions, was picked #1 as they received 15
votes. Southern Oregon University received 5 first place votes
and ranked #2.

ROBIN HAGEN-SMITH TO BE INDUCTED INTO NAIA HALL OF FAME

Coach Robin Hagen-Smith already has a long list of
accomplishments on her resume; however March 2011 she can
add the highest honor yet: induction into the NAIA Hall of
Fame. Hagen-Smith joins an elite group of 20
individuals that will be inducted this year including
Scottie Pippen and Bill Odell.
"It is an incredible honor to be inducted into the NAIA Hall of
Fame," said Coach Robin Hagen-Smith. "I am proud to be
affiliated with the NAIA organization and all it represents. I
would like to thank all the players and staff who have been
associated with our basketball program at Shawnee State University.
It has been a rewarding experience for me to coach so many
outstanding student athletes who have contributed greatly to our
success. I have truly been blessed, and it has been a privilege to
be involved in the teaching and coaching profession over the years."
Robin Hagen-Smith
started her coaching career in 1983 when Shawnee State was
still a community college. In 1989 she guided the
Bears transition from community college into the NAIA as a
four-year institution. In her 27 years of coaching,
Robin Hagen-Smith has posted an overall record of 640-187
and is one of the NAIA all-time winningest active coaches
and overall winningest coaches ever. During her tenure
at Shawnee State she has led the Bears to 17 national
tournament appearances, 10 conference championships,
National Runner-up in 2010, and a National Championship in
1999. Hagen-Smith has received many coaching awards
that include MOC and AMC Coach of the Year honors six times,
1997-1998 WBCA IKON Coach of the Year, 1999 NAIA National
Coach of the Year, 1999 Dispatch Women's Ohio Basketball
Coach of the Year, and in 2008 was named the NAIA Region IX
Coach of Character.
Hagen-Smith played
basketball for Shawnee State Community College from
1979-1981 and then transferred to the University of Rio
Grande. In 1989 she was inducted into the Rio Grande
Athlete Hall of Fame and in 1998 she was inducted into the
South Webster Hall of Fame. She received the
Portsmouth Spirit of Leadership Award in 1999.
Hagen-Smith was inducted into Shawnee State's Athletic Hall
of Fame with the Inaugural Class in 2000 and was inducted in
2009 as part of the NAIA National Championship Team.
In 2010 she was inducted into the Ohio Basketball Hall of
Fame.
Coach Hagen-Smith
is also active off the court as she is a full-time faculty
member at Shawnee State, Shawnee State's Champions of
Character Liaison and is also active in her church.
Hagen-Smith and her husband, Gregg, who has been her
assistant since 1988, have two children, Ali and Aleza.

The Shawnee State volleyball team received a #19 ranking
in the Tachikara-NAIA Volleyball Coaches Preseason Poll.
The poll was released Tuesday and features three Mid-South
Conference teams. Shawnee State heads up the MSC
teams, while defending MSC champion Georgetown College is
ranked #23 and Campbellsville University is receiving votes.

TURF CONSTRUCTION

Construction on Shawnee State's multi-purpose field
"Shawnee Turf" is underway and will wrap up in just over a
month. Shawnee Turf will be a multi-purpose field that
will be home to the Shawnee State men's and women's soccer
teams and will also be used by the university for
intramurals. The artificial turf field will be 80
yards by 120 yards. An advanced drainage system will also be
installed giving the ability of playing in wet weather
conditions. The field will include permanent graphics
and line striping and includes new light poles with security
lighting.
Shawnee Turf is
scheduled to be open for the Bears' first home game on
September 8th. The women's team kick off their home
season against Mountain State at 2:00 p.m. with the men's
game against Ohio Valley Christian at 4:00 p.m.
Shawnee State will
hold an opening ceremony for the field on Alumni Weekend on
September 25 as the Bears take on St. Catharine in a
conference doubleheader.

VENTERS SIGNS WITH COLONIALS
7/21/2010
Shawnee State alum Jonathon Venters has signed to play
professional baseball with the Pittsfield Colonials in
Pittsfield, Massachusetts. The Colonials are part of
the Canadian American Association of Professional Baseball.
Venters made his
debut with the Colonials on Tuesday against the Brockton Rox.
Venters pitched five innings allowing one run on six hits,
one walk while striking out four in the Colonials 2-1 loss.
Venters, a 2008
graduate, was a four-year letter winner in baseball at
Shawnee State. He accumulated a 15-16 record on the
mound and a career ERA of 4.48. |

FOUR SPRING ATHLETES NAMED NAIA SCHOLAR ATHLETES

Shawnee State had four athletes
named NAIA Scholar Athletes for Spring 2010, three of which
are repeat NAIA Scholar Athletes.
Bryan Spille and Cody Robbins has been
named NAIA Scholar Athletes in golf. Spille, a junior from
Cincinnati, Ohio has earned this honor for the second
consecutive year. He is a Biology major and has
accumulated a grade point average of 3.96.
Robbins, a junior from Piketon, Ohio is a
Business Administration major and has accumulated a grade
point average of 3.6.
Brian Ramey was named an NAIA Scholar
Athlete in baseball for the second consecutive year.
Ramey, a senior from Franklin Furnace, Ohio graduated from
Shawnee State with a degree in Business Administration and
accumulated a grade point average of 3.88 over his four-year
career.
Katie Daniel was named an NAIA Scholar
Athlete in softball for the second consecutive year.
Daniel, a senior from Catlettsburg, Kentucky is a
Mathematical Science major and has accumulated a 3.6 grade
point average.
To be eligible to be NAIA Scholar Athlete,
a student-athlete must maintain a minimum grade point
average of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale and have achieved junior
academic status to qualify.

GESICK AND BUTLER NAMED HONORABLE MENTION ALL-AMERICAN

Shawnee State outfielder Danny
Gesick and catcher Phillip Butler have been named to the
NAIA Honorable Mention All-American Team.
Gesick, a sophomore from Pickerington,
Ohio, was named AMC Player of the Year as he lead the
conference with a .438 batting average. On the season
he batted .385, while leading
the Bears with 74 hits, 12 homeruns, 62 RBI's, and 56 runs
scored. He was second on the team with
17 doubles.
Butler, a junior from Spring, Texas,
batted .339 this season and led the Bears with 74 hits and 19 doubles.
He was second the team with 11 homeruns and 52 runs batted in.
Only 12 Shawnee State baseball players
have earned All-American status. They are the first to
earn the status in the past six years.

AND '99 CHAMPIONSHIP TEAM INDUCTED INTO OHIO BASKETBALL HALL
OF FAME

Robin Hagen-Smith, along with
SSU's 1999 National Championship Women's Basketball Team was
inducted into the Ohio Basketball Hall of Fame. The
ceremony took place at the Convention Center in Columbus,
Ohio on May 22. Coach Hagen-Smith and the National
Championship Team joined an elite group of inductees
including ten coaches, six college players, a club owner,
and an official in the 2010 Hall of Fame Class.
Coach Hagen-Smith took over Shawnee State
when it was just a community college and has bolstered the
program into a perennial national contender at the NAIA
level. Over her 27 years, Coach Hagen-Smith has led
the Bears to a remarkable record of 636-186, including a
record of 560-134 in the NAIA. Coach Hagen-Smith has
led the Bears to seventeen national tournament appearances,
finishing with 11 Sweet Sixteen's, two Elite Eight's, one
Final Four, one National Runner-up, and a National
Championship in 1999. During her tenure at Shawnee
State, Coach Hagen-Smith has captured 10 conference
championships, including six consecutive titles from
1997-2002. Coach Hagen-Smith has been named MOC and
AMC Coach of the Year six times, 1997-1998 WBCA IKON Coach
of the Year, 1998-1999 NAIA National Coach of the Year,
1998-1999 Dispatch Women's Ohio College Basketball Coach of
the Year, and in 2007-2008 was named the NAIA Region IX
Coach of Character Award Winner.
Joining Robin Hagen-Smith in the Ohio
Basketball Hall of Fame was the 1999 National Championship
Women's Basketball Team. The team defeated St. Francis
80-65 in the championship game to capture the title.
The Bears compiled a 31-2 record that season and were
American Mideast Conference regular season champions.
Members of the 1999 Women's Basketball Team include NAIA
National Player of the Year Erica Hayes, Brandi Baker,
Carrie Brisker, Mamie Brisker, Cheri Griffith, Becky Holden,
Brandy Humphrey, Susie Kline, Brandi Munn, Steffani Slone,
Kelli Smith and Sarah Ward.

SSU'S ALUM COMPETES IN BOSTON MARATHON
5/22/2010
SSU's Assistant Men's Cross Country Coach Blake Jones
competed in the Boston Marathon and finished 94th overall
out of 22,629 finishers. Jones, who was a four-year
runner at Shawnee State and has
been the Bears assistant coach for five years, ran the
course in 2:32:02.

SSU PLANS TO JOIN MID-SOUTH CONFERENCE IN
2010

Shawnee State University has announced its
intent to withdraw from the American Mideast Conference
following the 2009-2010 year. The timing coincides with
their application to join the Mid-South Conference beginning
in the fall of 2010.
“We have enjoyed our time in the AMC having
developed some great friendships and rivalries with numerous
teams throughout the conference,” SSU Athletic Director Jeff
Hamilton said. “However we felt it was the right time to
start looking at an alternative conference as more and more
teams are looking elsewhere.”
