Honors Program Admission Requirements
Admission into the Honors Program is selective and attempts to build a community that has the characteristics of a selective admission college or university within the larger population of Shawnee State.
The following sections explain how to gain admission into the program:
Admission as a Freshman
Incoming freshmen students who have applied for or have accepted admission at SSU may be offered admission in the Honors Program under the following criteria:
- Evidence of significant scholarly achievement in high school (GPA of 3.5 or higher);
- Or a score of at least a 26 (composite) on the ACT or combined 1,220 on the SAT;
- Complete a one-page essay answering the following questions: 1) Why do you want to be a part of the SSU Honors Program;and 2) What do you hope to gain from the experience? (Required)
- Two letters of recommendation (may be from teachers, coaches, school counselor, youth leaders, employers) (Optional)
For consideration, submit materials by March 1, 2018.
Admission Requirements for Transfer Students
Transfer students may qualify for admission into the Honors Program with a minimum GPA of 3.3 at another institution of higher education.
Transfer students who have taken relevant Honors courses at other institutions may request that up to 9 hours of appropriate classes be applied to the Honors Program at the discretion of the Program Director. At least 9 hours of Honors coursework must be completed at Shawnee State.
Admission Requirements for Current Students
Any Shawnee State student with a minimum GPA of 3.3 may be admitted into the Honors Program.
