General Education Program

Shawnee State University's General Education Program is a requirement of all four-year degree programs, regardless of the major. The program has requirements in the following general categories: English Composition, Quantitative Reasoning, Fine and Performing Arts, Social Sciences, Natural Sciences, Western Cultural Perspectives, Non-Western Cultural Perspectives, Ethics, and Senior Seminar. Shawnee's General Education Program is designed to provide students with critical skills, competencies, and knowledge necessary for success in both their personal and professional lives.

Shawnee State uses a variety of approaches to assess the effectiveness of the General Education Program, including a survey, standardized/nationally-normed tests, exams written by SSU faculty members, and rubrics applied to samples of students' work. The various assessment initiatives and the associated goals are outlined in the following diagram.
