Career, Professional, & Graduate Information

People with degrees in the mathematical sciences enter a wide variety of professions, including careers in business and finance, computer science, law, industry, and education. According to a salary survey conducted by the National Association of Colleges and Employers, bachelor's degree candidates in mathematics received starting offers averaging $43,304 a year in 2005. The mathematical sciences major prepares students for careers in which analytic, problem solving, and quantitative skills are of central importance.

The study of mathematics is an appropriate foundation the pursuit of a master's or doctorate degree in a variety of areas, including business administration, computer science, economics, engineering, law, and medicine.  Students from our program have entered graduate programs in biostatistics, computer science, education, mathematics, and meteorology.

A study released by CareerCast.com ranks mathematician as the best among 200 types of jobs. (Follow the link for details on their data and methodology.) Second and third in the ranking are Actuary and Statistician, careers which rely also heavily on mathematics.
