FEBRUARY DINNER AND A MOVIE

The Honors Program will be meeting in the 4th Floor Massie Hall at 5:30 PM on Tuesday, February 26 to eat dinner before attending the SSU International Film Festival’s screening of the critically acclaimed 2005 film Water.

Nominated for Best Foreign Language Film at the 2007 Academy Awards and winner of the Genie Award for Cinematography, Music, and Best Leading Actress, Water provides a revealing look at a group of widows living in poverty in pre-independent India.  Set in the 1930’s, the movie presents a scathing critique of Hindu traditions regarding the position of widows and the caste system.  Directed and written by Deepa Mehta, the movie was voted one of the top ten movies in Canada in 2005; however it is banned in India due to violent protests and an attempted suicide by one protester.

SSU Professor Dr. Deepa Sitaraman, who is from India, will be hosting the viewing of the film, which begins at 7:00 PM in Massie Hall’s basement Lecture Hall, Room 020.

R.S.V.P. IS REQUIRED.  THE DEADLINE TO R.S.V.P. FOR THIS EVENT IS TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 19.  PLEASE E-MAIL DIRECTOR SHANNON LAWSON AT SLAWSON@SHAWNEE.EDU TO R.S.V.P.

FALL SEMESTER 2007--FIRST ANNUAL HONORS PROGRAM T-SHIRT DESIGN CONTEST!

Are you an SSU Honors Student who would like to win a $25 gift certificate to Buffalo Wild Wings?  If so, then send us your own original design for Honors Program t-shirts!

We want a creative logo and a quote that will raise awareness about what the Program is all about. The name of the winning design artist will appear on the shirt.  Submissions are due by October 3; those attending the Honors Open House at Massie Hall’s fourth floor lounge at 5:30 PM on Thursday, October 4 will vote for the best design.

Your design can be created in the photo editing program of your choice, or it can just be an old-fashioned color sketch.  Only one color of ink will be used on shirts, but we can order colored tees.  Include with your submission your full name, e-mail address and phone number so we can contact you if you are the winner.  Please keep in mind that inappropriate language, gestures and images will not be accepted - keep everything in good taste!

Once the winning design is chosen and the t-shirts are made, all Honors students who attend at least one Honors event will receive a free t-shirt, compliments of the Honors Program.

HONORS PROGRAM SURVEYS ARE HERE!

If you are an Honors student, and would like to fill out a survey, you can print out a copy of it here.  After completing the survey, please return to Taryn Malone in Administration Building, Office 135.  If you are unable to get the survey online, you can pick up a hard copy of the survey in Ms. Malone's office.

FREE HONORS RIBBER DINNER AND PLANETARIUM SHOW ON JUNE 7!!!

You're invited!  The Honors Program will be dining at the Ribber and then going to the SSU Planetarium on Thursday, June 7.

We'll be meeting at Taryn Malone's office (Massie 135, in the Social Sciences Dept.) at 6:00 PM, and will then walk over to the Ribber on Gallia St.  Students' dinners will be provided by the Honors Program.

Following dinner, we will head back to campus by 7:30 PM in order to watch "Sight and Sound: A Planetarium Experience," which will be presented by Honors student Arthur Bogard.  The planetarium experience will consist of the following:

Hubble Show: A 30-minute exploration of the images that the Hubble Space Telescope has captured as well as explanations of the phenomena shown.
Skies Tonight: An examination of the spring skies and the constellations therein.  A historical look at many of the constellations during the show.
Colors: A sight and sound experience soaring through the seasons backed by a Japanese techno-mix.
Earth's Wild Ride (trailer): The new "roller coaster ride" in which observers fly through a canyon in an intense short show.
The skies in 3D: After the shows, if time is left and people are interested, the guide can take you through known galaxy and solar system explaining many phenomena and demonstrating extra-solar drift patterns.

This is a wonderful opportunity for everyone to unwind before Spring Quarter finals week.

***Space is limited, so make your reservation as soon as possible!!!  If interested, please RSVP Shannon Lawson (slawson@shawnee.edu) by June 1.

HONORS VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR SHANTY TOWN 2007!!!

The Honors Program is currently seeking students to represent the Honors Program at the 2007 Shantytown event.

Shantytown is from 10:00 AM on May 22 until 5:00 PM the following day (May 23.)  Volunteers will be living in their own cardboard makeshift houses overnight, and will be expected to collect money for the local homeless shelter.

Being able to claim participation in an event that is as well-publicized as Shantytown allows students to give their grad school applications an edge--not to mention that participants will be making new friends and learning information about other on-campus clubs and organizations.

If you are interested in participating, please contact Taryn Malone at malonet@shawnee.edu or 351-3095 by Thursday, May 10.

Thanks!

SSU Honors Students Attend Rembrandt Exhibit
Article by Rebecca Cox, Communications Specialist (Originally appeared December 7, 2006)

Students in the Shawnee State University Honors Program traveled to the Dayton Institute of Art on Nov. 3 to view the Rembrandt and the Golden Age of Dutch Art, Treasures from Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam. Joining the students were
Shannon Lawson, M.A., an SSU English instructor, and SSU librarian Connie Salyers, M.L.S.

The SSU honors program brings students together in a challenging but supportive environment which nourishes their intellectual, social, and creative growth.

Honor students are expected to participate at least once every year in a program such as the Rembrandt trip.
Lawson said the exhibit included an extensive collection from Rembrandt’s Dutch contemporaries, enabling students to compare and contrast trends and styles.  “We wished we had more time,” Lawson said.

Chris Dunham, an honors student on the trip, said, “We had a mixture of students on the trip, we had art majors and business majors. The art students really got into the exhibits, but everyone took something away and found something different they liked in the museum.”

Melissa Laugle, another honors student on the trip said the event fostered campus involvement, and emphasized camaraderie. She also said the exhibit would be featured in just three U.S. cities.

Lawson, the future coordinator for the Honors Program, is planning on more trips that bring students together by focusing on events that cover the numerous majors found among the honor students. Such activities include a possible hike in the winter quarter for Biology majors and nature enthusiasts. In an attempt to appeal to different interests, Lawson also mentioned local events, and group trips to shows at the Verne Riffe Center for the Arts.
