A dual major from Minford, Ohio, senior Abbi McKinney is earning degrees in High School Math Education and Mathematical Sciences at Shawnee State University. During her time at SSU, McKinney has found a community of people whose interests align with hers in a comfortable close-to-home environment.
“When I was in high school, I had the opportunity to do College Credit Plus, so I ended up coming here to do that since I'm from the area,” she said. “So, when it came time to choose a college, this is where I felt comfortable.”
Within the Mathematical Sciences program, McKinney has found connections with others who shared her love of learning and math.
“It’s nice to be able to go into the math center and know I can have an academic discussion that I can enjoy and learn from with my peers,” she said. “I enjoy the community of it.”
McKinney also has taken advantage of the opportunity to leave SSU with two degrees as a dual major.
“I am a High School Math Education major so the two majors align, and it worked out that I can just do a little more work and graduate with two degrees instead of just one,” she said.
McKinney has found her experience in the Mathematical Sciences program at SSU a testimony to the dedicated faculty and staff who make up her community, ensuring every student's success. Free math tutoring for all students is available in person in the Dayton duMeleau Math Success Center in the Administration Building from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Friday.
